Church Marketing?
By Brian L. Parsons

Church Marketing. The term seems almost heretical to many mainline denominational Christians. "Why should we have to market Jesus?", many will ask. "People should be seeking Him out!" Right?

Yes, that is true, but not scriptural. The Bible teaches us in many places that we should be the ones seeking. This seeking is commonly called Evangelism.

Marketing is really nothing more than evangelism. It is a way to communicate, through various forums, what Christ and more specifically, what your church is all about.

As a matter of fact, marketing originated in the Church. It was Mr. Gutenberg and his printing press that really started the whole thing. It was his desire to see everyone with a Bible in their hand that gave birth to type-setting and mass printing. This new technology was then capitalized upon by Christians in other forms such as hymnals, newsletters, and bulletins. All of which were some of the earliest forms of marketing.

As new technology was invented, sadly the Church was one of the last entities to take notice. Many churches don't even have a web site and yet nearly 80% of American households have internet access. Most modern and post-modern Americans will not even visit a church that they cannot first investigate on the internet. Far fewer churches and ministries have begun to capitalize on email as a viable, efficient and cost effective form of communicating with their members.

Times are changing. If we, as the Body of Christ, are going to keep up with society in order to reach them, we are going to have to change too. All for the main purpose of the Gospel; to love the world into a relationship with Him.
